Bloomington middle school students qualify for national map contest

Oak Grove Middle School students Bella Marker and Grace Jarvis took first place in the Minnesota Map Contest for the third consecutive year with their map about the St. Paul Gangster Era. The pair qualified for the national competition.

The statewide competition asks middle school students to find an interesting and important story about Minnesota and present it as an ArcGIS story map. Working individually or in teams of two, students research their topic of interest and create their story map using ArcGIS Online, a geographic information system (GIS) used by businesses, governments and people around the world.

Oak Grove and Olson middle school Dimensions Academy students won four of the top five places in the competition: Megan Muff and Nora Priede Von Herber (Oak Grove) took second place with a map about renamed Minnesota places; Joseph Shetaye (Olson) took fourth place with his map about Minnesota and Chinese Tariffs; and Preston Le (Olson) finished fifth with his map about the 1862 Dakota War.
